What is the Recommended Vehicle for Manali to Leh Ladakh Road Trip?

Going on a road trip, your vehicle is the first thing you have to take care of. The road from Manali to Leh isn’t so good and there are a lot of rough places where you need to drive carefully. So, these are the recommended vehicle for this road trip:

  • Car – Any Compact SUV or SUV is preferred (Petrol / Diesel) or a Car with decent ground clearance will work if you don’t have an SUV or Compact SUV. CNG and electric cars (like E2o) are not suggested because CNG won’t be able to give you good performance while going up on the mountains and also you will not be getting many CNG pumps for getting Gas fueled up (Especially after crossing Patiala, there are no CNG Pumps available). Electric cars are not able to do long journies, you will not get charging sockets in between the route (as of February 2021).
  • Bike & Scooty – You can use any bike for doing this trip. Scooters with manual gears are not recommended because your hands gonna get tired a lot. Also, scooty is not suggested as it will not be easy to tackle with rough surfaces with a scooty.

From Manali, Continue towards Rohtang which is about 51 Km from Manali. After reaching Rohtang, take a break and click some pictures and then continue your journey towards Surajtal and Baralacha La using Leh-Manali Highway. Following this one route called Leh-Manali Highway, you will easily reach Leh passing through Rohtang, Surajtal, Baralacha La, Gata Loops, Nakee La, Lungalacha La, More Plains, Taglang La, and then reach Leh.

Do this 12 hours journey in 2 days taking proper halts at food points. Take stay at Keylong, Jispa, and Sarchu for a comfortable and safe ride. Avoid riding in the dark.

Even if you are going for a shorter duration, it is suggested that you visit at least Nubra Valley and Zanskar Valley. So, without taking more of your time, let’s get started with the itinerary of Manali to Leh Road Trip.

Day 1: Manali to Sarchu (223 Kms via Leh Manali Hwy)

  • Leave from Manali early in the morning before 8 AM so that you can reach Sarchu with enough time in hand.
  • Take your first break at Gulaba View point which is just a few kilometers ahead of Manali. Then continue for Gulaba Water Falls.
  • Continue your ride on Leh Manali Highway and stop at Filmcity Hill View Point which is quite a popular tourist spot on this route.
  • Take your next break at Rani Nallah where you’ll spot snow coming from uphills and falling on the road you are standing at. Rani Nallah is situated along with Rohtang Pass, so just a few kms and you’ll arrive at your first destination of the day. From here, we’ll continue our journey towards Sarchu.
  • Continuing from Rohtang Pass, our next stop will be Tandi Bridge. As you are in Tandi, don’t forget to fill up your bike or car tanks as there are not many pertrol pumps available on this route.
  • Passing by Keylong, Jispa, and Zing Zing Bar, you’ll arrive at Suraj Tal Lake which is near to Baralacha La Pass. Take a little break here and enjoy maggi at food point available near to the lake. Just a couple of kilometers ahead you’ll arrive at Baralacha La Pass.
  • Passing through Killingsarai, you’ll arrive at your destination for the day which is Sarchu.

Day 2: Sarchu to Leh (250 Kms via Leh Manali Hwy)

  • Try to leave from Sarchu at around 8 in the morning so that you can have enought time to explore the route and reach Leh before sunset.
  • Just a few kilometers ahead of Sarchu, you’ll enter the Ladakh region. First stop for the day will be Nakee La which is located at altitude of 4739 meters form sea level.
  • Drive for about 40 minutes (18 Kms) ahead of Nakee La and you’ll arrive at Lachungla which is located at an altitude of 5065 meters. Continue driving for about 80 Kms, you’ll arrive at TanglangLa Top which is a major tourist attraction on this route. Take a few minutes break here and then continue your ride.
  • Take a break at Indian Oil Petrol Pump (GMaps Search: 8J5VWPWG+CV) and get your vehicle tanks filled. In just an hour, you’ll be in Leh.

    • way back in 1986 i travelled for my job in leh onward to tsaga village in nyoma block as teacher. i have travelled on zojilla road also.since no one told me how dangerous roads were i took it as routine.all has changed now. good that you have written blogs and are guiding people and that is great.by the way i was 23 yrs then having been witess to pangong tso damchok untrekable khardungla then .well man all changed now.
